On August 15, 2024, José Valim announced the establishment of the official Elixir Language Server team. The team members include Jonatan Kłosko, Łukasz Samson, Mitch Hanberg, and Steve Cohen. This new team aims to enhance the code intelligence infrastructure for Elixir, supported by Fly.io and Livebook. The Elixir Language Server implementation, which evolved from Jake Becker's initial project in 2017, faced technical debt over time. Multiple implementations, including ElixirLS, Next LS, and Lexical, each brought unique strengths. With the new team, existing implementations will be consolidated into a single project, leveraging the strengths of each approach. The initiative will benefit from stable foundations, comprehensive functionality, and general interface for LSP implementations. The project will also explore better integration with the Elixir compiler, aiming for shared compilation artifacts. The announcement encourages community sponsorship and promises future updates and smooth transitions for current language server users.
